ZEITGEIST
zeit·geist
/ˈtsītˌɡīst,ˈzītˌɡīst/Learn to pronounce
noun
the defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time.
"the story captured the zeitgeist of the late 1960s"
The Zeitgeist of today is one of permission. Permission to "be one's self" regardless as to what that may really mean, how it may impact others, society, or the world at large. It is one of permission to indulge in every impulse, every thought, and every uncomfortable feeling that we think now gives us seniority over our neighbor.
This zeitgeist had might as well be an actual, literal spirit.
Perhaps it is.
Or even a group, a colony, an alignment, or a legion of spirits. It is the pervading sentiment of the world and it is taking up root in our minds and souls.
There is no longer consequence for our indulgence of self pity and ravenous thoughts. Consequence belongs to the weak and the feeble and those who are not enlightened. For us, we urinate in the drinking supply, and pleasure ourselves on the street corner—all in the name of waking up and becoming alive. Though we poison the children and teach them to disgrace themselves by abandoning wisdom and substance for the sake of riding the common wave of being one's self.
"Prayer is how we see heaven invade earth. It's what opens up the floodgates for God to come down and be involved in our everyday circumstances." -Jean Wilcox
